Description

The major role played by the forces of the British Empire on D-Day was in the victory of 1945. In the eyes of history, the British army as a whole has been forgotten. In the eyes of the general public, the ally, the liberator, was above all the GI from across the Atlantic, who shared the aura of the victor with the Soviet soldier. The contribution of the British Empire to victory on all fronts is underestimated. In 1944, the army of the United Kingdom and its dominions was more powerful than ever. It committed the very best of its fighting forces to the decisive "Overlord" operation.

Benoît Rondeau, a former researcher at the Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Déportation and history and geography teacher, is a specialist in the Second World War, particularly the campaigns in North Africa and Normandy.
