"We would have liked to have been a little more involved," says Rémy Cassigneul as he looks out to sea. Every year on 6 June, he and his wife Marguerite, residents of Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer, raise the Canadian colours in memory of the Allied landings in 1944 and pray for all those who fell. Before their very eyes, they saw their "liberators" mown down by enemy bullets.

Very young fighters who died in the prime of life to liberate a country they barely knew. The Canadian cemetery keeps their names alive: "Blanchard", "Albert", many of them of French origin, Québécois or Acadians.
