Description

The Second World War was the conflict that produced the largest number of documents, photos and films bearing witness to the fighting. These archives, which are still widely used in commemorations and historical publications, all too often obscure the fact that behind them stood real "soldiers of the image", guardians of Time, armed with their cameras, without whom no fixed trace of these events would have survived in the collective memory.

The CFPU - Canadian Film Photo Unit was one of these courageous units, often risking their lives to record, preserve and transmit these historic moments.

This talk will look at the Canadian photographers and cameramen of 6 June 1944, and the equipment they used in the field.

The lecturer, Gilbert Gallez, a Belgian senior officer from the Ecole Polytechnique specialising in telecommunications, is an expert on military operations and the audio-visual resources of the Second World War. He is the author of several books, including Caméra au combat and Reporters au Combat.
