Description

Once upon a time, at the time of the dinosaurs, the future Normandy was covered by a tropical sea. Over time, this carbonated mud from the lagoon was transformed into a homogeneous, fine-grained limestone. The oldest traces of the use of Caen stone date back to Antiquity. In the 11th century, under the reign of William the Conqueror, Caen stone was used to build religious and military buildings in Normandy and England. Reconstruction after 1944, and above all the restoration of historic monuments, contributed to the renaissance of Caen stone.
