Young children (ages 4 to 7): first waves and splashes

Water games and familiarization

On the Côte de Nacre, the sea becomes a vast playground where little ones take their first steps as sailors.

The goal is simple: have fun, get splashed, and learn to navigate the ocean with confidence.

At this age, it’s not yet about performance, but about pure enjoyment and sensory discovery.

Stage moussaillons Luc-sur-Mer

These 5-day courses offer a complete and safe immersion experience designed to turn your fear of the open water into a true passion:

  • Get comfortable in the water: Water games, supervised swimming, and lagoon workshops to help you feel right at home in the water.

  • Learning while having fun: We learn to balance on large group paddleboards, discover the secrets of the wind with kites, and take the helm of a small Optimist dinghy.

  • Exploring the marine world: Between sailings, children set out to explore the intertidal zone through beachcombing sessions and sensory workshops designed to help them listen to and understand the sea.

Bonus: Under the guidance of specialized instructors, our budding captains celebrate their achievements on Fridays with a fun, friendly snack time.

.

When and where?

  • Starting in April: Check out these activities at the Luc Yacht Club and Voiles de Nacre (Langrune).

  • During summer: Head to the Courseulles sailing school. Another option is to go kayaking on the Seulles River for a peaceful paddle.

Other experiences to share

To round out the adventure or experience the sea in a different way, there are other options available for you and the kids:

  • Schooner Cruises: Hop aboard a large group boat for a smooth and comfortable ride—perfect for a first family outing.

  • Beachcombing: Armed with nets, the children set out to explore the rocks at low tide in search of the treasures of the local marine life. Reservations required in Langrune and Luc-Sur-Mer

  • Kayaking on the Seulles: An exclusive activity in Courseulles-sur-Mer offering a peaceful river cruise, far from the waves, available to children ages 5 and up when accompanied by an adult.

Ages 7–9: Focus on independence and the thrill of the ride

This is the age when things get serious—but always with plenty of fun!

For our young surfers, this is the perfect time to test their reflexes and find their own style.

Whether alone, in pairs, or in a group, each child progresses at their own pace using equipment that is perfectly suited to their size (life jackets, helmets, and lightweight boats).

On the agenda:

  • The School of Independence: Becoming the sole captain of an Optimist to learn how to master the wind on your own

  • Speed for two: Choose the stability of a small catamaran (XS or 10.5) and share the thrill of speed with a friend (offered by all three clubs).

  • A group experience: Hop aboard a Ludic, the quintessential group dinghy in Courseulles, to learn how to maneuver as a team.

  • Glide across the sand: For those who prefer to zoom along at full speed without leaving dry land, Courseulles offers an introduction to sand yachting for ages 9 and up.

“Leisure & Fun” Activities (per session)

For a change of pace between courses or to spend some quality time with the family, other adventures await:

Towable tube: For a rush of adrenaline and lots of laughs with friends!

Sea Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddleboarding: Perfect for exploring the coastline and improving your balance while having fun.

Ages 10–12: Packed with sports and excitement!

Summer sailing camps & recreational courses

At this age, the introductory phase is over—it’s time to step it up a notch! Preteens are entering a stage where they can really start exploring the athletic side of the ocean.

Whether on the water or on the sand, everything is designed to help them improve while having a blast with their friends.

Children gain greater independence: they learn to steer, prepare their equipment, and understand the winds and their paths.

What’s on the workshop agenda:

  • Sport Catamaran (S / 12 / 13): This is the ideal boat for learning coordination as a pair. You’ll experience the sensations of heel and speed on responsive boats, available at all three clubs (Luc, Langrune, and Courseulles).

  • Windsurfing (Beginners): The perfect challenge to test your balance and gliding skills! An activity offered by all the clubs along the Côte de Nacre to help you master your first gusts of wind.

  • Beach Sailing (Advanced): For those who have already discovered the joy of beach sailing, Luc and Courseulles offer a course to help you improve your skills, learn how to trim your sail, and take faster lines across the sand.

  • The Multi-Activity Course: An exclusive offering in Courseulles-sur-Mer for those who can’t decide! It’s the perfect way to try a little bit of everything: catamaran sailing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or even sand yachting—the program changes every day depending on the weather.

In addition to the courses, young people can get out and about in sea kayaks or on stand-up paddleboards to explore the coastline.

For those looking for maximum thrills with friends, the towable tube promises unforgettable moments of laughter.

Clubs: Specialties & Children’s Programs

Courseulles-sur-Mer Sailing School

Sailing school in Courseulles-sur-Mer welcomes children in a central location.

The alternate waterway

  • It’s every parent’s nightmare: having a session canceled because the sea is too rough. Courseulles is the only club in the area with access to the Seulles River. If the sea is too rough for the younger kids, the session is safely moved to the river. Your children get to practice no matter what.

Modern facilities and state-of-the-art equipment

  • Modern facilities: With a 900-square-meter building, the club offers proper changing rooms and, most importantly, hot showers after class. It’s the little details that make all the difference in ensuring your child doesn’t end up freezing at the end of the morning.

  • Modern equipment: The club replaces its boats on a regular basis (approximately every 3 years). Your children sail in boats that are reliable, lightweight, and designed to fit their body size, which makes learning easier.

A “No-Pressure” Approach to Teaching

  • Feedback from parents often highlights the instructors’ patience and empathy. Here, the focus is on personal growth: participants learn to sail, but they also learn to respect nature and understand the weather.
  • The club emphasizes teamwork (especially on group boats like the Ludic) rather than pure competition.

The Temple of the Sailboat

  • If your child is a bit reluctant to go in the water when it’s cool, Courseulles is the go-to spot in the region for sand yachting. On the vast expanse of Juno Beach, they’ll experience the thrill of speed right away while staying dry (or almost!). It’s a great alternative for those who prefer to stay on dry land.

A commitment to civic engagement and inclusivity

  • It also means supporting an organization certified by Norm’Handi. The club is a pioneer in welcoming people from all walks of life. For parents, this means a sailing school with strong human values, where tolerance and mutual support are the watchwords on the dock.

Luc Yacht Club (Luc-sur-Mer)

The Luc Yacht Club is the perfect club for families looking for a friendly atmosphere, dynamic instruction, and, above all, a never-ending array of activities—even in winter.

New:

  • Spotlight on Sand Yachting: It’s the perfect activity for winter break. You can enjoy the fresh air and the thrill of speed on the sand without getting soaked in cold water. Available starting in February.

  • Wetsuits provided: The club is fully equipped to handle cold temperatures, allowing teens and preteens to try water sports from the start of the year in optimal conditions of safety and thermal comfort.

A “Family Spirit” atmosphere

Parents often appreciate the Luc Yacht Club for its family-friendly atmosphere:

  • It’s a small, close-knit club where the instructors often know the children by name from one year to the next.

  • The welcome is warm, and the clubhouse is a lively hub where you can easily chat with the teaching staff.

The ultimate spot for water sports

If your child is looking for a thrill (windsurfing, wingfoiling), Luc is the place to be:

  • Consistent winds: The layout of the seawall and beach often provides ideal wind conditions for windsurfing and new board sports.

  • Modern fleet: The club is investing heavily in the latest trends, which is a big draw for teenagers looking for something modern.

A lively and reassuring seawall

For parents, the LYC offers a very convenient setting:

  • The immediate proximity to shops and the seawall in Luc-sur-Mer makes it easy to go for a walk or grab a coffee while keeping an eye on the children playing in the water.

  • It’s a very lively environment that makes the logistics of drop-off and pick-up much more pleasant.

Versatility

The LYC knows how to keep things interesting. As well as sailing, the club offers:

  • Towable tubes: A great way to cap off a week-long camp or celebrate a birthday with friends.

Voiles de Nacre (Langrune-sur-Mer)

Langrune-sur-Mer is all about the spirit of “water sports and the open sea.” If you’re looking for a club where your child can learn teamwork while enjoying a pristine natural setting, this is where the adventure begins.

The Catamaran Experts

In Langrune, catamaran sailing is a way of life.

The club has an impressive fleet, ranging from the tiny XS for 7-year-olds to sport catamarans for teenagers.

  • Pair sailing: We encourage sailing in pairs, which allows children to make friends right away and learn to work together to handle the sails.

  • Thrills guaranteed: These boats are responsive and high-performance, perfect for those who love the feeling of the boat accelerating across the water.

The “Towed Buoy”: The Essence of Fun

If there’s one club where tubing is a real institution, it’s this one.

  • It’s the perfect activity to unwind after school or during the holidays.

  • Parents love it for birthday parties: laughter and excitement are guaranteed in a safe environment supervised by certified instructors.

A natural and safe spot

Langrune Beach is particularly popular with parents because of its layout:

  • Light current: The water is often calmer here, which is very reassuring for beginners and parents watching from the shore.

  • The charm of the “Digue Haute”: You can watch your children play from the seawall overlooking the beach, which offers an incredible panoramic view of the boats.

A relaxed and authentic atmosphere

This club is often cited for its “old-fashioned vacation” vibe, yet it features state-of-the-art facilities.

  • The welcome is simple, straightforward, and all about enjoying time at sea.

  • The club is deeply integrated into village life, which gives it a special character, a far cry from large, impersonal organizations.

Practical Tips for Parents & Grandparents

Option 1: Summer Weather (Sun & Heat)

Even when the sun is shining, the wind and the glare off the water amplify the effects of the weather.

  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen (SPF 50+), even if it’s cloudy, and lip balm.

  • Clothing: A white T-shirt or UV-protective top (spandex) to prevent chafing under the vest and sunburn.

  • Head: A cap or hat (with a drawstring so it doesn’t blow away at the first gust of wind).

  • Eyes: Category 3 or 4 sunglasses with a strap (essential!).

  • Footwear: Old sneakers or neoprene water shoes (avoid flip-flops—they’re slippery!).

Option 2: Cool or Rainy Weather (February / Spring / Fall)

In Normandy, there’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Here, the right gear makes all the difference between a great memory and a nightmare.

  • Under the wetsuit: A swimsuit, but also a thermal top (such as a thin fleece or technical ski base layer) if your child feels the cold easily.

  • Windbreaker: Wear a waterproof jacket or a sailing windbreaker over your wetsuit to prevent wind chill.

  • Head: A wool or synthetic hat. You lose 30% of your body heat through your head!

  • Footwear: Thick neoprene booties or sailing boots.

In the backpack (All year round)

  • Changes of clothes: A complete change of clothes (including socks and underwear!).

  • The shower: A bath towel and shower gel.

  • Snack: A water bottle and an energy-boosting snack (cereal bars, fruit compote) to replenish the calories burned in the water. Sometimes provided by the club for the Moussaillons. Please inquire when registering.

  • The plastic bag: A large bag for storing wet items without getting the rest of the bag wet.

What Clubs Provide (Generally)

  • The wetsuit: Sometimes included in the course fee (please check when registering).

  • Life jackets: Required and provided to all guests.

  • The helmet: Provided for sand yachting and sometimes for catamaran sailing in strong winds.

Formalities

Licensing and Insurance

Any activity in an affiliated club (FFV for sailing, FFCV for karting) requires a license.

  • Sailing Passport: For a one-week course, the club will issue you a “Sailing Passport” (approximately €13.50). It includes liability insurance and personal accident coverage.

  • One-Day Pass: If you’re participating in a single activity (tubing, paddleboard rental), a “one-day” pass is often included or required.

  • Personal Insurance: Make sure your “Extracurricular” or family “Liability” insurance covers water sports. Even if the club’s insurance is comprehensive, having your own coverage is a plus.

Water Proficiency Test (Ages 7 and up)

For all water activities (except the introductory program for 4- to 6-year-olds and sand yachting), the law is strict:

  • Certification: A swimming certificate or proof of water proficiency is required.

  • Where can this be done? At any public pool before the camp. The lifeguard will have the child jump into the water and swim a few meters.

  • Exception: For the Jardin des Mers (ages 4–6), since immersion is not the goal, this test is generally not required, but the child must be “comfortable in the water.”

Medical Certificate / Health Questionnaire

  • For minors: Good news—a medical certificate is no longer required in all cases. You’ll simply need to fill out a health questionnaire (Cerfa). If all your answers are “NO,” you don’t need to see a doctor.

“Actual” vs. “Administrative” Age Limits

  • The transition age: If your child is 6½ years old, some clubs will place them in the 7–9-year-old group if their size allows it. The reverse is also true: a very shy 7-year-old might be better off in the “Moussaillons” group.

  • Beach Sailing: The age of 9 is often a strict cutoff. Children younger than that don’t always have the physical strength or leg length needed to operate the rudder (the pedals used to steer the boat).
