Description

Screening of a documentary (2012) by Robert Tremblay on Canadian veteran Gilbert Boulanger. Reservations recommended. Eighty-eight-year-old Gilbert Boulanger, a Canadian veteran of the Second World War, receives a hero's welcome in the small Normandy town of Courseulles-sur-Mer. The film recounts the incredible destiny of this man whose name will remain forever in the memories of the inhabitants of this corner of France. Indeed, during an emotional ceremony, and in front of a large crowd, the local elementary school was named after this former aviator who lives in Sherbrooke, Quebec. The documentary reveals the gulf between Canada and France when it comes to recognizing veterans of the war against the Nazis. Through the quest of an old man to keep alive the sacrifice of his former comrades-in-arms, the story focuses on the abandonment of the duty to remember the volunteers of 39-45. The film lifts the veil on the curiosity of younger generations, more curious and eager to learn than those who preceded them. The aviator who survived more than 37 missions over hell, asks himself why he survived, and denies being a hero.
