This exhibition presents a dialogue between two artistic worlds: that of Eloa, centred on watercolour and Indian ink, and that of Marie-Émeric Gance, a visual artist working in mixed media. The works on display complement one another through their contrasts as much as through their similarities, and the forms seem to retain the memory of the artist’s touch and emotion.

On the one hand, the fluidity of water, the delicacy of ink and the evocation of landscape; on the other, a more organic, sensitive and introspective approach. Through landscapes, materials, evocative forms and inner traces, the two artists invite the public to discover works where perspective, emotion and artistic expression intersect.

Based in Normandy, ELOA is a watercolourist who also works in Chinese ink.

Trained in Chinese calligraphy by SHI BO and in Chinese painting by GU Gongdu, and steeped in Taoist philosophy, her practice is rooted in a millennia-old tradition in which the movement of the hand reflects the spirit’s impetus and spontaneity.

During her first stay in Africa, she gave up her work as a psychiatrist to devote herself to painting and writing, activities she continued in Uganda and Nigeria. These years in Africa gave rise to several exhibitions, including ‘Paris-Niamey-Beijing, back and forth’, shown in Niger and Normandy in 2014 and 2015, as well as a variety of experiences, including running art workshops for children and working as a prop master for a theatre company in Kampala, Uganda.

In the tradition of Chinese painters, she has chosen a pseudonym: ‘silky foam’, or ‘wave flower with a thousand reflections’, which is calligraphied on each work alongside a red stamp – a symbol representing the world’s constant transformation and the gentle nostalgia associated with it.

Marie-Émeric Gance is a visual artist and a graduate of ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres. Her work explores the memory of materials, traces of the body and organic forms through a practice combining collage, drawing, painting, ink, textiles and sensitive materials. Through processes of layering, alteration and repair, she creates works in which the surface becomes skin, an imprint and a site of tension.

Her artistic world explores the connections between the intimate and matter, fragility and persistence, in an approach that is at once visual, poetic and contemporary.

Her approach forms part of a contemporary art practice attentive to traces, materials and the sensitive forms of living things. Alongside her artistic practice, she teaches the arts and develops educational projects centred on imagery, graphic design and visual expression.
