Description

From April 12 to 20, the town of Courseulles-sur-Mer is giving Philippe Pousset and Jonathan Bréard carte blanche. Together, they will prepare an exhibition combining arts and crafts.

Following in the footsteps of photographer Olivier Mercier and painter Sarah Lévêque, wood sculptor Philippe Pousset and metal sculptor Jonathan Bréard will take over the Salle Quiquemelle to present their work.

During the week-long exhibition, the two artists will be bursting with creativity, each creating a work which will then be permanently exhibited in the town. But we're not telling you any more than that just yet....

Who is Philippe Pousset? Philippe, a sculptor by trade, grew up surrounded by nature, influenced by the craftsmanship of his grandfather, a carpenter, and his father, a gardener. With a diploma in cabinetmaking, he worked in a variety of wood-related trades before moving to Morocco in 2008 as a site manager.

It was in 2009, after an exhibition of Constantin Brancusi, that he discovered his passion for sculpture. He gives a second life to dead trees and old electricity poles by creating totem poles.

Returning to France in 2017, he continues to experiment with new materials such as snow, metal, slate and land art. Since 2011, he has taken part in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad.

Artistic approach

Philippe mainly sculpts wood, but also works in slate and metal. Using a chainsaw and traditional carpentry tools, he works the material instinctively. His works are inspired by nature, time, fire, feminine forms and tribal and Celtic arts. He also makes wooden furniture.

Who is Jonathan Bréard? Jonathan Bréard, sculptor and visual artist, first trained in stone carving and engraving before turning to metalwork. Inspired by his experience with a scrap metal dealer, he began transforming salvaged parts into a metal bestiary in which his imagination plays a central role.

His work, blending metal, wood and resin, is expressed in monumental works such as sculptures inspired by the Viking world, steampunk and nature. His commissions include a Pegasus sculpture for the Merville-Franceville Battery, the "Patron Saint of English paratroopers", and a monumental metal dragon made up of over 6,000 spoons for the Cidre et Dragons Festival.

Artistic approach

Jonathan observes scrap metal as a playground, searching for familiar shapes. His process is based on assembling and transforming raw materials into creatures and structures. He favors an intuitive approach, giving life to mechanical, luminous or poetic sculptures, often imbued with an industrial aesthetic.
